Pendleton is a city located in northeastern Oregon on the Umatilla River. The seat of Umatilla County, Pendleton is located about 188 miles east of Portland. The Umatilla Indian Reservation is adjacent to the east. Agricultural processing is the leading industry in Pendleton, and the city's main products include flour, canned and frozen vegetables, woolen clothing and blankets, and Western leather goods. The city is famous for the Pendleton Round-Up, a rodeo held each September since 1910. Pendleton is also the site of a community college. The city was established in the late 1860s and incorporated in 1880. In its early years, Pendleton was a staging point for cattle drives from Oregon to Idaho and Montana. Pendleton thrived after 1889 when the arrival of a line of the Northern Pacific Railroad made it a center for the Columbia River Basin wheat industry. The name commemorates George H. Pendleton, a Democratic candidate from Ohio for vice president in 1864.
