Ventura is officially San Buenaventura a city and seat of Ventura County, southwestern California, on the Santa Barbara Channel (an arm of the Pacific Ocean); incorporated 1906. It is a service, retail trade, and manufacturing center located in an agricultural region where lemons are grown. Ventura, one of the oldest non-Native American settlements on the U.S. Pacific Coast, is the site of San Buenaventura Mission, established in 1782 by the Spanish missionary Father Junípero Serra. The Ventura County Museum of History and Art, containing Native American, Spanish, and U.S. pioneer artifacts, and a community college are also here.
