Stockton, city in central California, seat of San Joaquin County, and a deepwater port at the head of navigation on the San Joaquin River. It is an important warehousing, distribution, and processing center for the fertile San Joaquin Valley. Agriculture is the city’s primary industry. Manufactures, in addition to numerous food items, include electronics, lumber, plastics, and automobile products. The city is served by Stockton Metropolitan Airport.

The University of the Pacific, Humphreys College, a branch campus of California State University-Stanislaus, and two junior colleges are located in the city. The Haggin Museum, the Children’s Museum of Stockton, and the Oak Grove Nature Center are among the city’s attractions. The Asparagus Festival takes place each April.

The community of Tuleberg was founded on the site of Stockton in 1847 by Captain Charles M. Weber. Weber later changed the name of the city in honor of Commodore Robert F. Stockton, a naval officer who took part in the seizure of California from Mexico in 1847. The city grew as a supply center during the California gold rush and incorporated in 1850. Growth continued in the 1870s and 1880s as agricultural production increased; the arrival of the railroads and the development of the Port of Stockton in the early 1900s solidified the city’s position as an agricultural hub.
