Richmond is a city in Contra Costa County, western California, a deepwater port on San Francisco Bay; incorporated 1905. Manufactures include refined petroleum, chemicals, electronic equipment, and processed food. A junior college is here. Richmond is linked by bridge with San Rafael in Marin County. The community was founded in 1899 as the western terminus of the Santa Fe Railway, which was completed the following year. The city was a leading shipbuilding center during World War II and probably is named after Richmond, Virginia.
